Spied here, heavily disguised under stretched and widened Jetta bodywork, is a mule housing prototype components for two cars: Volkswagen’s New Compact Sedan and New Mid-Size Sedan. Both will spearhead the company’s attack on Japanese and Korean dominance of the import sector in the U.S. market.

It is VW’s ambition to become the number-one global carmaker, surpassing even the Toyota juggernaut. To reach that goal, obstacles need to be overcome, a major one being the brand’s lackluster performance in the U.S. Due to misguided product policies and the occasional severe quality problem, VW has dropped off the radar screen for many customers—if it was even there in the first place.

Both the NCS and NMS sedans will be built on Volkswagen’s modular transverse platform, a new architecture that the company claims will carry as many as 130 different body variations across its brands, including the VW Rabbit, Eos, Passat, and Audi A3. The NCS will be developed mainly for the U.S. market, and it may retain the well-established Jetta moniker. The larger NMS is intended to simultaneously satisfy U.S. and Chinese tastes, so beware of chrome and ostentation. It won’t go to Europe, where the next Passat will be aiming to make life difficult for the BMW 3-series and Mercedes-Benz C-class.

Why is VW walking away from global cars, especially at a time when other automakers are globalizing? The company feels that American and Asian customers don’t appreciate the refinement of its current offerings. “U.S. customers look at car size and engine displacement. They won’t pay a dollar extra for a Passat over the Camry just because of its finesse and attention to detail,” a company executive told us in Wolfsburg. And he was concerned the NCS and NMS might still be too costly to produce compared to their Asian competition.

Indeed, the Passat, despite its merits, doesn’t come close to the sales success of the Honda Accord or Toyota Camry, but the Jetta has consistently done well in the U.S. Europeans find it hard to believe, but the Jetta enjoys an aura of coolness here, a reputation enhanced by performance versions such as the GLI, which was never available in the Old World. In Europe, the Jetta has always been viewed as an old folks’ car; it hasn’t sold well and was renamed twice as the Vento and the Bora before VW ruefully (and without much effect) reverted to the original moniker.

While the NCS and NMS are developed with strict cost-cutting targets, there is no reason to be concerned about a lack of capability on the road. The rather agricultural but still competent 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine is expected to carry on; for real fun, look for different variations of VW’s turbocharged 2.0-liter TSI engine and the 2.0-liter TDI turbo-diesel. VW could also bring the highly efficient 1.4-liter TSI to the U.S. Dual-clutch transmissions will replace the current automatic gearbox, and all-wheel drive is a possibility.

The New Mid-Size Sedan will be built at VW’s Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant. The New Compact Sedan, which shares its platform, could be made there as well. Both vehicles will be available in 2010 as 2011 models.

Its 2.2-liter turbocharged engine was memorable for fierce reactions, big noise, and an uncompromising character. But when the RS2 (C/D, May 1994) concluded its limited run and the Audi 80 turned into the A4, we had to wait five years for the next "super Quattro"—the S4. That meant it was quick but also civilized: quiet, easy to drive, not really an Ingolstadt hot rod.

Comes now the RS4 Quattro, the most powerful production Audi yet unleashed, producing 375 horses from its rather-more-stressed 2.7-liter V-6. Cosworth Technology, a division of Audi since last year, has tweaked the intake and exhaust flow to the five-valve heads. What’s more, the crankshaft, the connecting rods, and the pistons are beefed up to withstand the larger KKK turbos. The result is a steady 325 pound-feet of torque from 2500 to 6000 rpm.

That stream of power definitely commands your attention. Launched properly, this little wagon claws its way to 62 mph in 4.9 seconds, and the speedo will show 100 mph in a sniff less than 12 seconds. Although a chip limits top speed to 155 mph, Audi’s engineers say they regularly saw 179 during testing at Nardo.

Officially, the RS4 is made not by Audi but by Quattro GmbH, the company’s in-house subsidiary that assembles cars to custom order. Alas, no RS4s are headed for America. The car’s short life span means that the cost of U.S. certification cannot be justified.

At roughly $63,000, the RS4′s price in Germany is steep but not colossal, and unlike the upcoming BMW M3—probably this Audi’s closest competitor—the car comes as a wagon only, ensuring that golden retrievers throughout Europe will be treated to riveting demonstrations of speed. It’s not often you see a wagon with emphatically flared wheel arches and a pair of ducts funneling air to inter-coolers. All the body panels, save the hood and roof, are unique.

The ride is borderline harsh, and the tires sing on anything but mirror-smooth tarmac, but the handling is sharper than any A4′s to date.

The old RS2 perpetuated the notion that heavily turbocharged engines had two distinct phases—languid and explosive. Now, however, the RS4′s 30-valve V-6 is unobtrusive and silent at low revs, building to its maximum output smoothly and progressively with virtually no lag. Acceleration is effortless in the way of, say, big V-8-powered Benzes, so that passengers are often unaware of the speeds being summoned.

Smith, meanwhile, settled down to the kind of smooth, steady driving that had carried him to two previous titles. He was second in both runs at Pikes Peak, where the Viper was noticeably slowed by the altitude. He was first and second at Sandia, where a minor off-track miscue slowed one run, and he was first in both Road Atlanta runs and first again in both Summit Point time trials.

So the issue of Smith’s ascendancy was never very much in doubt. There were, however, a couple of surprises. Foremost was the 1986 Corvette entered by Lap Puppies John Boos and Todd Cleasby. A 33-year-old Wisconsin native who has just become part-owner of a Corvette tuning shop – Ward Sports (www.car-vette. com) – in Anoka, Minnesota, Boos set the C4 up for One Lap after learning about the event from Adee. Power – "520 horsepower at the crank," according to Boos – is delivered by a 383-cubic-inch small-block V-8 sending thrust through a 1994 Corvette six-speed gearbox.

Boos also stiffened the suspension – the car doubles as his daily driver – and the whole project consumed "about $20,000 in parts," not to mention lots of wrenching. Still, the Vette didn’t look unusual – until Boos showed what he and the car could do. The short version: Although he was new to all the road circuits, only at Road Atlanta did Boos fail to finish in the top five.

"It was terrifying," he reported. "Not knowing the line at Road Atlanta is not good."

The high points of his campaign came at Tulsa, where he disconnected the Vette’s anti-roll bars and astonished everyone, including himself, by posting the quickest time on the half-mile dirt oval, duplicating the feat on the paved oval at Lancaster.

Boos finished third overall and called the whole experience "the best time I’ve ever had in my life."

The other surprise among the top contenders was the 1963 GSR Corvette Grand Sport replica campaigned by Michael Miller and Aaron Quine (see sidebar). Quine was on hand last year in another Grand Sport replica, an orange roadster that ran well at times but was plagued by mechanical problems. Thanks to new ownership, the 2002 coupe sequel was far more formidable. Quine was quickest in three road-course time trials (twice at Pikes Peak, once at Sandia) and throughout the event was poised to pounce if Smith stumbled. But he didn’t, giving the Viper its third straight One Lap title, while Smith became the first three-time champ since the event adopted its current scoring system 10 years ago.

Although the drama was a little thin at the front of the field, there were, as always, other interesting diversions.

Tops on this list was a nondriving event sandwiched between runs at Road Atlanta. The principals were Matt Hubbard and Gwen Butler, teammates in a 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo. When the event concluded, however, they were more than teammates – they were husband and wife. Hubbard made the early run, clocking 5:34.424 for his three-lap standing-start run, 18th quickest, while Butler went off to don a classic white satin wedding dress, complete with train, then hopped into the Karl Troy-Steve Griffin Lamborghini Diablo, enlisted to enhance her entrance. A Lambo limo.

Hubbard, meanwhile, quickly swapped his driver’s suit for a tuxedo, and the two exchanged vows in front of the bleachers overlooking the Road Atlanta front straight. The ceremony was clocked at 11:34.59, breaking the record set by the only other One Lap wedding, at Las Vegas International Raceway in 1997. After a brief reception, Mrs. Hubbard swapped her bridal wear for a driver’s suit and piloted the Porsche in its second run. Her time: 6:09.086, 54th among the afternoon runners. Honeymoon jitters? Who knows?

As always, there were maintenance heroics. Adee’s saga was a good example of the determination that seems to animate event regulars – "Very One Lap," was the way one competitor summed it up – but there were a couple others even more noteworthy. One was furnished by the Saturn boys, who pulled an all-nighter to make sure their L200 sedan (see sidebar) was on hand for combat at Lancaster Speedway. The other story belonged to Rick Ehrenberg, whose nitrous-boosted ’69 Plymouth Valiant – a.k.a. "The Brick" – had come to grief against a concrete barrier during its second Sandia run, an encounter that punched holes in the radiator and shredded the forward portions of its fiberglass front fenders. Hey, fiberglass front fenders? On a ’69 Valiant? Don’t ask.

Save the Earth: Drive a Ferrari – Feature – Auto Reviews – Car and Driver

Amid the huffing and puffing on Capitol Hill and elsewhere about jacking up the corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) for new vehicles to 35 mpg by 2020 (or up to 50 mpg if you happen to live in California) while reducing tailpipe emissions to the level of an ant fart, it seems the world has overlooked this surprising statistic: Toyota Priuses are

78 times more toxic to the environment than Ferraris. Furthermore, they consume 78 times the amount of gasoline.

The Math That’s right. Although we’re sure to be called out on this by our more persnickety readers, the math breaks down thus:

Since the beginning of the 2004 model year, when the current Prius debuted, Ferrari has sold roughly 7900 cars in North America. Annual mileage for the average Ferrari is tough to estimate, as some are destined to remain zero-mile collectors’ items while others are daily drivers, but according to a Ferrari spokesman, Ferraris sold in North America get driven “right around 5000 miles per year for V-12 models, less with the V-8s.” Assuming, then, that the average Ferrari is driven 4500 miles per year, the total fleet mileage for this fresh herd of prancing horses is 35,550,000 miles per year (all too few of them with our hands on the reins).

The average Ferrari CO2 emissions level hovers somewhere near 400 g/km, or 644 g/mile, according to Ferrari. Over the 35 million or so miles that the fleet of North American Ferraris will travel in the next year, they will be responsible for approximately 23 million kg of CO2. Fuel consumption, at an average of about 14 mpg combined for the Ferrari fleet, will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 2.5 million gallons of gas. Sound like a lot?

Look at how the Prius is pillaging Mother Earth. Since the 2004 model year, when Toyota introduced the current-generation Prius (and through November 2008), Toyota delivered 609,625 units. Toyota claims the average Prius is driven 15,000 miles per year, for a total fleet mileage of 9,144,375,000 miles annually. According to Toyota, the Prius coughs up a comparatively dainty 118 g/km, or 190 g/mile, of CO2, but with all those rolling doorstops on the road, that results in an atmosphere-choking 1.7 billion kg per annum, or roughly

78 times as much as the Ferrari set. And all the gas consumed over those nine billion

or so miles, even at a combined 46 mpg, still robs the earth of about 200 million gallons of gas, also 78 times as much as is consumed by Ferraris. Pigs.

Toyota, for its part, was glib when confronted with the facts. A Toyota spokesman, who declined to be named, said, “Ferraris are

green ?

I thought they were all red.”

Just Kidding, Sort Of

Okay, we’re totally not serious. Suggesting that, between a Ferrari and a Prius, the premium-swilling prancing horse would be the most environmentally responsible option would be journalistically irresponsible, despite the 1.7 billion kilograms of CO2 that today’s Priuses will pump into the atmosphere over the next year, the 200 million gallons of gas they will consume, and the innumerable quantities of raw materials required to build them

and their bespoke metal-heavy hybrid battery packs. Believe it or not, the Prius hardly makes a dent in the environmental picture while meeting the needs of far more commuters at far less expense to them as well as the earth on a

per-mile basis than a Ferrari. Indeed, if every Prius driver switched into a Ferrari and drove it 15,000 miles per year, the overall picture would be far less green—but a lot more red.

We appreciate Toyota’s clear commitment to making the Prius the incredibly green vehicle it is, to say nothing of how much greener the all-new

will be when it launches in January at Detroit’s 2009 North American International Auto Show. But to us, these facts underscore that it’s not the cars themselves that are doing the damage, but the drivers. If we all drove less, it might matter less

what we drive than how and how often. If we were all really smart about when we drive, we

could save the world by driving Ferraris.

Hey, Environmentalists: Instead of Legislating the Prancing Horse into Extinction, Try Walking

We hope this fact is not lost on our lawmakers as they further their green-car agendas, the results of which could result in a de facto ban of exotics and super-luxury cars in many states, or at least exorbitant fines being slapped on them. Certainly, buyers of these cars are accustomed to exorbitant fines already (six-to-seven-figure MSRPs and gas-guzzler taxes). But the added cost might be just enough of a deterrent to keep some customers away—particularly with the economy in the shape it’s in—and that could prompt Ferrari, Lamborghini, and other high-end makes out of the U.S. altogether.

If there’s one caveat, it’s that these states are not alone. European Union lawmakers recently approved an aggressive plan of their own to reduce CO2 emissions, and high-end carmakers are already bracing to deal with that. In any case, we hope the folks in Washington, D.C., Sacramento, and the EU keep things in perspective as they enact legislation that could quite possibly erase the most colorful and beautiful cars in the world from the automotive landscape.
